UHM Sustainability Awards 2006 nominees and winners announced
Chancellor commends all; winners given cash prizes
The University of Hawaii at Manoa (UHM) has announced the campus' 29
nominees and eight winners of the inaugural University of Hawaii (UH)
Sustainability Awards. (For a complete list of nominees and winners,
go to the end of this story.)
The nominees and winners were recognized at an awards ceremony on Oct.
25, 2006, in the UHM Sustainability Courtyard, in conjunction with
Campus Sustainability Week 2006 activities.
At the awards ceremony, UHM Interim Chancellor Denise Eby
Konan praised all the nominees for their "excellence in sustainable
activities."
The UH Sustainability Awards are designed to recognize students,
faculty and staff on all 10 campuses for their work in promoting
sustainable management at the university. This year’s UHM
Sustainability Award nominees reflect the depth and breadth of the
research, curriculum and community service projects taking place at
this major educational and research institution, with its nearly 20,000
students and numerous research units providing outreach to the
community.
"It was extremely rewarding to see the variety and excellence in the
projects that were nominated," UHM Interim Chancellor Denise Eby Konan
said at the awards ceremony. "I know our judges had a very difficult
time choosing the winners, because each project had its own unique
merits."
The 29 projects were nominated from fields as diverse as the Schools of
Law and Architecture; the Colleges of Tropical Agriculture,
Engineering, and Languages; the Departments of Public Administration,
and Art; and the Center for Hawaiian Studies. Nominations came from
student-led extra-curricular initiatives, from faculty curriculum and
course projects, and from research and extension efforts throughout the
campus.
Winners were selected in eight categories:
1. Research and Design by UH Manoa Faculty or Students for Off-Campus
Project
2. Research and Design by UH Manoa Faculty or Students for On-Campus
Project
3. Curriculum or Course Project
4. Faculty- or Student-Organized Community Outreach Project
5. Recycling or Waste Management Project
6. Facilities/Landscape Management
7. Coordination and Leadership of Sustainability
8. Cultural Conservation
All nominees were presented with a certificate “recognizing excellence
in sustainable activities” signed by Interim Chancellor Konan and UHM
Sustainability Council Chair Mary Tiles, plus a gift bag containing a
solar water bottle from the Hawaiian Electric Company (HECO), a note
pad from American Savings Bank, and a book from Hawaii Business
Publishing. Winners received a $100 cash prize provided by the Henry A.
Walker, Jr., Endowment at the University of Hawaii Foundation.
The expert panel of judges consisted of:
Karl Stahlkopf, President of Renewable Hawaii, a subsidiary of
HECO
Sam Callejo, Vice President for Administration for the UH
System
Prof. Raymond Yeh, Dean of the School of Architecture
Supporters included:
Hawaiian Electric Company

The UH Sustainability Awards were conceived and coordinated by Dr.
Shirley J. Daniel of the UHM College of Business Administration, where
she is the Henry A. Walker, Jr., Distinguished Professor of Business
Enterprises, and where she serves as the director of the Center for
Entrepreneurship and E-Business, and director of the Pacific-Asian
Management Institute (PAMI).
Congratulations to ALL the nominees and winners! UH Manoa is proud of
the wide range of projects its students, faculty and staff are
